In memoriam: Hilary Doxford
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hilary Doxford, a dedicated advocate and valued member of the globaldementia community.
Her active and vocal participation in the First WHO Ministerial Conference on Dementia in 2015 helped ensure that thevoices of people living with dementia were heard at the highest political level. At a time when such perspectives wereoften underrepresented, she played a pivotal role in shaping a more inclusive and person-centred approach to dementiapolicy and practice.
Through her advocacy, Hilary helped lay the foundation for what is now widely recognized as meaningful lived experienceengagement. Her efforts contributed to a shift towards ensuring that people living with dementia are not only consulted, but actively involved in policy development, clinical decision-making, and the setting of research priorities.
While important progress has been made, we recognize that this vision is not yet fully realized. In honour of Hilary’slegacy, we remain committed to continuing this work; strengthening efforts to ensure that people living with dementia aremeaningfully engaged across all levels of decision-making.
Hilary’s voice, passion and leadership have left a lasting impact on the field. She will be remembered with great respectand gratitude. Our deepest condolences go to her husband Peter, family, friends and all who had the privilege of workingwith her.
