The Italian National Dementia Plan was defined in October 2014 by the Italian Ministry of Health in close cooperation with the regions, the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità-ISS), and the main three national patient and family associations. The main purpose of the plan was to provide indications for the promotion and improvement of interventions for field. Indications focused not only on specialist and therapeutic actions, but mainly on supporting people with dementia and their families throughout the care process.
The National Dementia Plan (NDP) established a permanent Table for dementia. Participant to the Table included representatives from the Ministry of Health, Regions/APs, the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità-ISS), the National Agency for Regional Healthcare Services (AGENAS), the Italian Medicines Agency (Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco - AIFA), the National Guarantor for the Rights of Persons Detained or Deprived of Liberty, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies (Ministero del lavoro e delle politiche sociali), scientific societies, patient and family associations.
The permanent table for dementia has the objective of monitoring the implementation of the NDP at a regional level, and providing guidance on dementia at a national level.

The plan included the following four main objectives and 17 actions:
Health and social care policies
1. Promoting strategies for primary and secondary prevention
2. Defining an updated map of available health and social care services for dementia
3. Promoting interventions aimed at establishing a regional integrated care network
4. Providing specific objectives for the assessment of interventions for dementia at a local level
5. Promoting and coordinating research activities in public health at a national level
6. Establishing a permanent Table for dementia
7. Defining an information system for dementia based on existing information systems

Development of a collaborative dementia network and implementation of integrated health and social care pathways
1. Creating, reorganizating and strengthening a network of services, including specialist services and memory clinics, ensuring the timely diagnosis and care, continuity of care, and an appropriate approach to people with dementia and their families.
2. Establishing a network of services, based on regional programs, answering to specific quality criteria for service provision and personalised care programs
3. Defining a standard of care provision providing general information on services and their accessibility

Implementation of strategies and interventions to improve quality of care
1. Developing guidelines and consensus statements.
2. Education and training

Raising awareness and reducing stigma to improve quality of life
1. Organizing and promoting events at a national and local level aimed at raising awareness, reducing stigma, and ensure the dignity and respect for people with dementia
2. Supporting interventions to actively involve and support family members/caregivers
3. Supporting the implementation of tools to monitor caregivers’ health and wellbeing
4. Supporting family associations and volunteer networks
5. Supporting informal support for people with dementia and their caregivers through activities such as Alzheimer cafes or other local initiatives.
