Report of the results of the Italian Fund for Alzheimer’s and other dementias

The report includes the results from the activities of the Italian National Institute of Health ((Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS), funded and supported by the Italian Fund for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
The Italian Fund for Alzheimer's and Other Dementias was approved in December 2021. The Ministry of Health dedicated 15 million euros to the 2021-2023 Fund. The main goal of the activities of the Fund was to define new public health strategies for approaching care for people with dementias and their families/caregivers. The Fund included seven main activities that were carried out by the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS), and five strategic research areas for regional projects and activities supervised by the ISS.
Results from the activities carried out by the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) within the Fund are reported in the National Report and in the Regional reports that are accessible through a dedicated area of the Dementia Observatory website.

The 2021-2023 Italian Fund for Alzheimer's and Other Dementias included the following seven activities carried out by the ISS:
1. Developing a national guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of dementia and MCI;
2. Updating the National Dementia Plan (NDP);
3. Monitoring the implementation of the NDP and the guidance from the permanent table;
4. Surveying and mapping dementia services in Italy (daycare centers, nursing homes and centers for cognitive disorders and dementias - CCDDs)
5. Promoting of dementia prevention strategies;
6. Developing educational and training strategies for healthcare professionals, family members and caregivers;
7. Defining and implementing a National Electronic Record for Dementia
The 2021-2023 Italian Fund for Alzheimer's and Other Dementias also included the following five strategic research areas for regional projects and activities:
1. Supporting the early diagnosis of mild neurocognitive disorder (ND)/mild cognitive impairment (MCI);
2. Supporting the timely diagnosis of major neurocognitive disorder (ND)/dementia;
3. Experimenting, evaluating and disseminating telemedicine interventions to ensure continuity of care in different dementia care settings;
4. Experimenting, evaluating and disseminating tele-rehabilitation to support participation, inclusion, and increase the quality of life of people with dementia and their caregivers;
5. Experimenting, evaluating and disseminating of psychoeducational, psychosocial, and cognitive interventions in people with dementia
